I have read and loved Morrison and Baldwin books. Have Wrights on my tbr pile looking expectantly at me! Still need to read DuMaurier work. And I tend to avoid the Russian masters.
You had me at “as someone who grew up on a literary diet that comprised almost entirely of books by Judy Blume, Ann M. Martin and Francine Pascal (of Babysitters Club and Sweet Valley High fame respectively)” - I now trust your recommendations implicitly 🥰😆 a few of these I already have on my ever growing tbr list, I really need to actually read them now!
Faye, you're a girl after my own heart! I will always have time for my teenage literary heroes, but thankfully there's also space on my bookcase for the chunkier classics too. Which books are on your TBR pile atm? let me know and I can tell you which one to kick off with! x
Such a great post. I adored Gone with the Wind too and Frenchman’s Creek is brooding and brilliant. I’ve not read any of the others you mention (to my shame)You’ve got me thinking about my favourite classics now…..
Writing about GWTW made me want to read it again - such a brilliant book. And you'll have to let me know which are your favourite classics when you've had a think! x
It may be cliche but War & Peace. So great. Also, The Master & Margarita, One Hundred Years of Solitude (I love it so much, I named one of my daughters Remedios) and Life, A Users Manual are all on my yearly read list. 😍
Du Maurier, Baldwin, Morrison - now this is a list of classics authors I can get on board with 👏🏻 👏🏻 👏🏻 you’re also the first person to ever make me want to read C&P! Like you, my literary diet was/is light on the classics - in my background being bookish just involves reading. The quality of the books was never a question anyone around me asked. My fave classics are Great Expectations, and Chinua Achibe’s Things Fall Apart which is probably the most heart breaking book I’ve ever read

You must read Native Son, it's incredible. And you are in for a treat with Du Maurier—try Rebecca or The Scapegoat first xx

I might add The Sound and the Fury. Such an interesting look at how women are perceived by men, yet without having their (her Caddy) own voice.
Gosh, I hadn't even heard of it (much to my shame!). Adding to my TBR pile pronto! x

I agree! I would definitely add it. My mom and I used to steal our family copy from each other. 😂
Ha, definitely something I've been guilty of in the past!
