Boy, oh boy, am I slammed at the moment.

I’m helping a friend out at his legal tech start-up for a few weeks and my GOD had I forgotten how time-consuming full-time work is—in an actual office, no less. For context, I think the last time I worked in an office was pre-Covid, and my work attire usually consists of sea-salted hair, a bikini top and trousers with an elastic waistband—and that’s on a good day.

So, starting a proper job, albeit it for a short stint, has been quite the rude awakening. Gone are the 5.30am sunrises. The two-hour reading sessions at Tamarama while the world slowly wakes up around me. Mooching home. A Spanish lesson. More reading. Pilates. Several hours faffing about on the internet scrolling through Substack, sourcing venues for new reading retreats, doing everything and (literally) anything other than the work I’m actually paid for, only to realise at around 4pm that I have a looming deadline, sixteen unanswered emails flagged as urgent, and an article I’ve not…
