What I've been reading on Substack
Links to everything I've loved on Substack this month...
I landed back in Bondi three weeks ago, to the wettest August since records began (joy of absolute joys). While not exactly the welcome home I had anticipated, it’s offered a great excuse to hunker down with flickering candles, copious cups of tea, and lots of great reads (I’m currently reading Wolf Hall; next up is Don Quixote).
I’m heading back to Paris in ten days, and from there I’ll go to London for a couple of weeks, before a quick jaunt back to Paris, and then on to Provence, where I’m hosting a très, très chic reading retreat at Chateau Saint Victor la Coste (le swoon). If you’re free the first weekend of October, and like the sound of a champagne reception, a long rosé lunch, and curated French reads (ooh la la), we have one spot left—so drop me an email if you can see yourself glugging a glass of rosé by that pool.
This week’s Substack is packed with some of the best things I’ve read on this platform during August. Think conversations with creatives, freelancing advice, book recommendations, and tips on how to really fucking love your life.
- Brown is one of my favourite journalists—and as someone who is also fast approaching 40, yet still can’t quite believe I’m no longer 27, I adored her reflections on a milestone birthday.
I can’t remember how I first came across
by , but it’s my new favourite cosy corner of the internet. Each week, she chats with a fellow creative about their daily routine—an excellent (and guilt-free) procrastination tool for when I really don’t want to do any actual work. For her latest conversation, she spoke to Sarah Levy……Which bring me to my next recommendation. Drinking Games by
is one of my favourite memoirs of recent years, and so I was thrilled to see she’s joined Substack. Her piece, on ‘good enough’ writing, is well worth a read.I read
’s Receipts from the Bookshop each and every week, and you should too if you don’t already. This gorgeous series offers readers a behind-the-scenes into life at Katie’s independent bookshop by the sea. The latest instalment is here, and, as always, it’s an absolute treat.I j’adore looking at other people’s bookshelves, and so
’s Sunday Shelfie is pure catnip for me. Her interview with , is a goody.
I try to write as much as I can without a paywall, but it does take time. If you’re enjoying this post, I’d be so grateful if you would consider buying me a coffee.
I loved this from

is a recent Substack recruit, and I loved her piece on the art of letting go.If you have a penchant for all things publishing, The Honest Editor
is well worth subscribing to. I loved Phoebe Morgan’s recent interview with two different literary agents.
Ahhh, thank you for the shout out Lucy!! So glad you enjoyed the piece with Sarah :) I loved learning about her day!
The Montenegro article is very good. I am a career counsellor by profession and though not practicing now I try to apply the principles in the article to my life as much as possible. Love Katie Clapham and Kit de Waal's articles too. 😍
